AdvancedMEMS was established in 2003. With our collaborators at the Beckman Laser Institute and UCI Medical Center, AdvancedMEMS pioneered the field of clinical 3-D MEMS based Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT). We continue to develop new, enabling technologies, allowing biophotonic technologies to reach their full potential in medicine and other fields.
Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), is a primary focus area of AdvancedMEMS. OCT allows high resolution, non-destructive cross sectional imaging of tissue in real-time. This emerging imaging modality was invented in the early 1990s and initially commercialized for high-resolution imaging in optometry. Many researchers have recognized the potential of OCT to provide "optical biopsies" in clinical applications, the primary obstacle is the realization of miniature, high quality scanning probes for accessing internal tissue and organs. AdvancedMEMS' technology provides the solution.
